We welcome your interest in our school and would love to meet with you to discuss your child's future, show you around and answer any questions you may have.
We know that the moving to a new school is both exciting and sometimes a little bit scary, whether as a new entrant transitioning to "big school” or an older child joining us from another school. We pride ourselves on the nurturing atmosphere within our classrooms, which helps our new children to settle.
Our welcome for new entrants begins with visits to the classroom accompanied by a parent/ caregiver. This gives our young children the opportunity to spend time with their new teacher, play with others and become familiar with the classrooms and outside environment. During these visits parents have the opportunity to meet with Lesley Brewer, our Deputy Principal, who will tell you a little more about what to expect during your child’s early days at DPS. For older children a tour of the school, the chance to say hello to their new teacher and perhaps spend a little time in the classroom will help them to begin to feel at home.
Making friends is an important part of the settling in process and at Devonport Primary School we find that our children are very welcoming toward new classmates. We operate a buddy system, with new children paired up with an existing class member who will help them to find their feet. In addition, each of our Year 0 to 3 children have their own "big buddy” from one of the senior classes and a favourite time for everyone is "buddy time”.
As a new parent to our school you will also be welcomed into our community. We encourage parents to get involved with the school and there are a number of ways for you to make new friends and get to know people. Our school community is enriched by our supportive network of parents and our Friends of Devonport Primary School group play an active part in bringing parents together through a variety of social events, as well as supporting the school by helping bring to fruition plans to enhance our school environment.
Our Enrolment Process
New families are encouraged to make an appointment to meet our principal to learn about our approaches to learning, and to tour the school. This is your chance to ask lots of questions!
Enrolment Packs are available from our Reception, please bring with you proof of address and birth certificate / relevant student / resident visas.
For new entrant pupils we operate a cohort entry process with new entrants joining the school at the start of each term. We encourage you to bring your child along to the school visits and the office staff will provide the dates for you. Those already enrolled will be sent a reminder.
When your child has been in school for around six weeks we like to check in with you to see how things are going. At this point you will be invited to meet with the class teacher to talk about how your child has settled in.
